A new Masters degree is being offered at PSTGU: Religious Aspects of Russian Culture in the 19th and Early 20th centuries

The aim of the new program, which will be launched in September 2015, is that of fostering a deeper understanding of the role of the spiritual values and religious experience of Christianity and Orthodox in the history of Russian culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Meeting of Greece-Cyprus Club
On May 10, 2017, in the Conciliar Chamber of the main building of Saint Tikhons University in Lihov Lane, an annual session of the Saint Tikhons University Greece-Cyprus Club was convened. The event was dedicated to the life of Orthodox parishes in Greece and Cyprus, and was organized by the Universitys Department of International Relations, with support from the Center for Spiritual Education.

On April 6-7, 2017, Daria Diachenko, who is working to create an electronic dictionary with the support of the Saint Tikhons University Development Fund, presented a paper at the Institute of Linguistics of Russian State University of the Humanities with a paper on The Dialect of Gammalsvenskby Village: Some Results of Studying its Vocabulary.

Various Easter church services and festive events were held at Saint Tikhons University. The Very Rev. Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov, the head of the University, led the night liturgy in the Church of Saint Nicholas at Kuznetsy, gathering together the clergy of the University, its teachers and professors, researchers, and students.

On April 1, 2017, on Saturday of the Fifth Week in Lent, an annual conference of undergraduate and post-graduate students of the Faculty of Theology was conducted in Saint Tikhons University as per the established tradition. This year, in addition to representatives of Saint Tikhons, the conference saw participation by visitors from Saint Petersburg Theological Academy, Moscow State University, Saratov State University, and Voronezh Theological Seminary.

On March 17-18, 2017, a Russian Orthodox seminary in France organized and conducted an interdisciplinary, international conference on Philosophical and Religious Thought in Russia and France in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was held as part of an ongoing seminar that is collaboration with French and Russian universities and centers of academic research.
Russian Avant-Garde as Revolution in Art

On March 14, 2017, a lecture was given by a senior teacher of the Faculty of Church Arts at Saint Tikhons, Nina Sekachova, on the Russian Avant-Garde of the 1910s: A Revolution in Art, as part of the lecture series on the 1917 revolutions.

Week of Russian Literary Culture and Teaching

From March 6-10, 2017, a Week of Russian Literary Culture and Methods of Teaching It in Schools was held in the Faculty of Pedagogy of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities. It was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the birth of Valentin Grigorievitch Rasputin (the famous Russian author not to be confused with the spiritual guide of the Russian Imperial family). The event in question was a continuation of the tradition, begun by the Faculty in 2013, of holding weeks dedicated to different topics relating to the Russian language.

Visit by Students of Pittsburg Seminary

From 27 February to 9 March, Saint Tikhons was visited by students of the Pittsburg Theological Seminary (in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA), led by Prof. John Burgess, a long-standing friend of the university. Prof. Burgess has been teaching systematic theology in the seminary for many years already, as well as an elective course on Orthodoxy. At the beginning of the year, the students decided to make a trip to Russia in order to become more closely acquainted with Russian history, Russian culture, and the Russian Orthodox Church. This year, the plan for the trip was packed full of interesting events and day-trip.

Japanese Academics Visit Saint Tikhons
On March 3, 2017, a group of academics from Japan visited Saint Tikhons University. The visit came about as part of a project whose purpose is to look into reforms of the system of teacher training and continuing education in Russia and other former Soviet countries. The group consisted of Yukiko Sawano, Professor of Pedagogy at the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo; Madoka Inoue, Professor of Religious Studies at Seisen Womens University, Tokyo; and Kuanysh Tastanbekova, a specialist in international research at the University of Tsukuba, Ibaraki. They had the opportunity to meet the Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy at Saint Tikhons, Tatiana Vladimirovna Sklyarova.

On February 21, 2017, Sergei Firsov, Doctor of History and Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies at Saint Petersburg State University, delivered a lecture in the Conciliar Chamber of the main building of Saint Tikhons University.
Saint Tikhons students complete internship in Italy
From January 26 to February 17, 2017, Saint Tikhons University students Eugenia Gromova and Michael Desyatov spent time getting teaching experience on an internship in Orsoline Sancarlo School, in Como, Italy. Ms. Gromova and Mr. Desyatov are studying for a Masters degree in Pedagogy at Saint Tikhons with their specialization being in Communication in Religious Pedagogical Culture, under the aegis of [S. O.] Divnogortseva, Doctor of Pedagogy.
Second year for Saint Tikhons student ball
On February 19, with the blessing of the Rector of the university, Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov, the second Student Ball of Saint Tikhons University, took place in the Izmailovsk Kremlin. The ball was dedicated to the bicentenary of the birth of the great Russian poet, author, and playwright, Count Alexis Constantinovitch Tolstoy.
Experts in Russian Church history take part in Helsinki conference
On February 12-13, 2017, the Eleventh International Educational Conference in honor of the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord (Sretenie/Candlemas), was held in the Russian Cultural Center in Helsinki, Finland. The conference this year was dedicated to bishops and heroes of the Orthodox Christian faith from Scandinavia and northwestern Russia.
A new semester of Russian as a Foreign Language begins
On February 7, Saint Tikhons University again began its course for students of Russian as a Foreign Language. Four students will be attending the lessons this semester: Claudia La Puma, Cecilia Tresoldi, Francesca Franzoni, and Mariagiulia Lodi from Sacred Heart Catholic University, Milan, Brescia. The Italian students are at Saint Tikhons as part of an exchange between the two universities and on individual study programs. They will be studying in the Faculty of Modern Languages (or Philological Faculty) during the spring semester.
Ninth International Conference on "People and the Fate of the Russian Diaspora"
From Feburary 2-4, 2017, the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in conjunction with Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities, conducted the Ninth International Academic/Educational Conference on "People and the Fate of the Russian Diaspora". Over the course of two days, almost 30 papers were presented by Russian scholars from various academic institutions in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Ulyanovsk, Bryansk, Kondrovo, and also foreign researchers from Latvia, the Czech Republic, and the Ukraine.

On January 31, 2017, the Russo-Georgian Society of Saint Tikhons University held one of its regular meetings. It was the first of its sessions to take place in the Conciliar Chamber of the famous former Eparchy House, now the main building of Saint Tikhons. In 1917-1918, the building hosted the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Proclaiming joy to all the world
On January 27, 2017, the Student Society of Saint Tikhons University, Horizont, staged an evening of music-making at the Universitys Kuznetsy campus. The event, entitled Proclaiming joy to all the world (Troparion of the Nativity of the Mother of God, Tone 4), was dedicated to the Christmas traditions of different countries all around the world.

An article by a student of Saint Tikhons University was among the selected papers published in the proceedings of the international conference on the Typology of Morphosyntactic Parameters, held at Moscow State Pedagogical University in 2016. The article by Daria Vyacheslavovna Dyachenko, a fourth-year student at Saint Tikhons specializing in the teaching of foreign languages, is about Russian and Ukrainian Loanwords in the Dialect of the Village of Gammalsvenskby (Nouns).
Lecture held by Einar Petander on the basics of learning Swedish
On December 29, 2016, Einar Petander, a Swedish native speaker and university professor, gave a talk at the Universitys Ilovaiskaya Street campus on the basics of learning Swedish. The whole lecture was delivered in English, enabling students who had never studied Swedish to understand the topics covered, including pronunciation, conversational vocabulary, grammar, and word order.

 On the 26th-27th of October, 2016, the session "Models of cooperation between educational institutions in Russia and Greece" was held within the framework of the Russian-Greek inter-regional and inter-municipal forum of humanitarian cooperation in Athens. The forum was organized by Rossotrudnichestvo, the Federal agency tasked by the Russian government with supporting the framework of the Russia-Greece cross-year.

Tatiana Krihtova and reader Kirill Aleksin, two faculty members from St. Tikhon´s University, spoke at the annual conference on Russian Studies in the Finnish capital. This international forum gathers researchers and experts in the social sciences, law, and economics at the University of Helsinki in autumn. The event was organized by the Aleksanteri Institute and the Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies Choices Russian Modernisation. The theme of the year for 2016 was Life and Death in Russia.
A British literature expert from Scotland gives several lectures for students of the Philological Department

On the 12th of October, 2016, the Philological Department hosted lectures by Dr. John Byrom, a specialist in British literature from Scotland. He gave two lectures for the students of the Germanic Philology Department. The first lecture was devoted to the works by Wordsworth and Coleridge, two poets who stood at the origins of English and European Romanticism.

The conference Around 1866: Leo Tolstoy and the Sixties (the 7th Interdisciplinary Colloquium of the OSTU Intellectual Club) was held at the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum.The theme of the conference was not chosen at random, as 1866 was a year of great importance in Russian and European history. It was the year of the Great Reforms, the year of the first attempted assassination of Tsar Alexander II (the Karakazov attempt), the year of the publication of Crime and Punishment by F.M. Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoys continuation of work on the novel War and Peace, and the scientifically and socio-politically significant publication of Sechenovs Reflexes of the Brain. In Europe, the year saw the Austro-Prussian Fraternal War, the spread of Marxs Capital, the rapid development of the socialist movement, and many other events. The pivotal nature of that year is why it was decided to dedicate the recurrent conference to different aspects of the historical and cultural life of 150 years ago.

The course is being attended by Vera Parolini and Marta Ferrari, two students of the Catholic University of Milan, with which St. Tikhons University will celebrate ten years of fruitful cooperation in 2017.

Fr. Stephen Headley gives three lectures for students of the Philological Department
On the 5th of September, archpriest Stephen Headley gave three lectures for students of the Department of Germanic Philology. Fr. Stephen was born in the United States, graduated from St. Vladimir´s Seminary in New York and St. Sergius Institute in Paris, and he now serves at the parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Vézelay, France.
